What Sets Our Workshop Apart
Marine watch care requires specific knowledge, specific tools, and a willingness to be honest about what a piece needs. This is how we approach every job.
Return to HomeSix Reasons Owners Return to Suriya Time
Coastal Environment Expertise
Salt air, high humidity, and repeated water exposure are the baseline conditions here, not exceptional cases. Our work is built around what marine timepieces actually face.
- Andaman Sea conditions factored into every assessment
- Gasket and seal selection suited to tropical salt water
Depth-Rated Pressure Testing
Testing is performed to the original rated depth of the specific model, not a generic standard. Results are recorded and provided to the owner.
- Model-specific depth ratings observed
- Written result on service ticket
Full Written Documentation
Every appointment generates a written record covering findings, parts replaced, and next service recommendations. Restoration work receives a complete folder.
- Service ticket for every job
- Restoration folder travels with the piece
Condition-Based Assessment
We do not strip and service every watch by default. Work is recommended based on what the inspection reveals, and findings are shared before anything proceeds.
- No automatic movement service without cause
- Owner informed before work begins
Vintage-Appropriate Methodology
Older marine chronometers and 1960s–70s dive watches are handled with period-appropriate techniques. The goal is preservation of character, not uniform modernisation.
- Period parts sourced where available
- Consultation on acceptable replacements
Original Parts Returned
Removed original components are returned to the owner with the watch. We consider them part of the piece's history and do not discard them without permission.
- All removed parts packaged separately
- Particularly important for vintage pieces
What Each Advantage Means in Practice
Fourteen Years Working with Marine Timepieces in Phuket
There is no shortcut to understanding what salt water and tropical humidity do to a watch over time. The corrosion patterns, the failure modes, the seal types that hold up and those that do not — this knowledge comes from working on marine watches in a marine environment, year after year. Our workshop principal has been doing this work in Phuket since 2010, and the team's combined experience covers Swiss, Japanese, and German movements across a wide range of eras.
This is relevant not as a credential to display but because it shapes how we approach every piece that arrives. A watch that has been used in the Andaman Sea is assessed differently from one that has been in a display cabinet, even if both have the same dial.
A Methodical Process with No Surprises
Each service appointment follows a consistent sequence: initial assessment, written findings, scope discussion with the owner, then work. Nothing significant is undertaken without the owner being informed first. This is not unusual for high-end service providers; we believe it should be standard practice for any watch work.
For restoration appointments, this process extends to parts sourcing: we discuss what is available, what it costs, and what it means for the piece before ordering anything. Owners receive a realistic timeline upfront, and we contact them if circumstances change.
Calibrated Testing Equipment for Diver's Watches
Pressure testing equipment is calibrated on a scheduled basis. We test to the model's original rated depth — 100m, 200m, 300m, or whatever the manufacturer specifies — rather than a lower generic standard. This matters because a watch that passes a light test but fails at its rated depth is not ready for active use.
Timing equipment is also used where movement work has been undertaken, to verify regulation within a reasonable tolerance before the watch is returned.
Communication That Respects Your Time
We respond to enquiries promptly and are straightforward about what we can and cannot do. If a piece falls outside our scope, we say so at the outset rather than taking it in and discovering problems later. Visitors to Phuket with limited time are accommodated where scheduling genuinely allows.
We are happy to discuss a watch by phone or email before confirming an appointment, particularly for vintage restoration work where a brief description of the piece helps us understand what is involved.
Transparent Pricing for Each Service
Our three service appointments are priced at ฿2,500, ฿4,900, and ฿8,000 respectively. These prices cover the scope described — there are no standard additions charged without discussion. Where additional work is discovered during an appointment, we contact the owner and confirm the scope before proceeding.
A watch that receives proper care costs less to maintain over the long term. Our service ticket for diver's watches includes a recommended interval for the next pressure test, which helps owners plan accordingly.
A Different Approach to Watch Service
Typical General Repair Shops
- Standard service interval applied regardless of actual condition
- Pressure testing conducted to a generic low-threshold standard, or not at all
- Verbal feedback only — no written record of what was found or done
- Removed original parts discarded as a matter of course
- Vintage pieces treated with the same approach as modern watches
- Coastal corrosion addressed superficially without movement inspection
Suriya Time
- Condition-led assessment — work recommended based on what is actually found
- Pressure testing to the original manufacturer's rated depth, result recorded
- Written service ticket provided; restoration work documented in a folder
- Removed original parts returned to owner in a separate package
- Vintage work uses period-appropriate methods; replacements discussed first
- Corrosion assessed thoroughly; movement opened only where case is compromised
Distinctive Features of Our Service
Salt-Air Restoration as a Specialist Appointment
Very few workshops treat coastal corrosion as a distinct service category. We do, because it requires different tools, different expertise, and a different conversation with the owner than a standard service.
Restoration Folder for Vintage Pieces
The documented folder produced during a marine chronometer or vintage diver restoration is kept for the owner's records and intended to pass with the watch to any future owner. This is an unusual offering at our price point.
Pre-Appointment Discussion at No Charge
We are happy to discuss a piece by phone or email before an appointment is confirmed. For complex or rare watches, this often saves time for both parties and helps us arrive at the correct scope from the outset.
Service Interval Guidance in Writing
Diver's watch service tickets include a recommended interval for the next pressure test, taking into account the typical conditions in which the watch is used. Owners who dive regularly in salt water receive more conservative guidance than those who use their watches primarily on land.
